THE FESTIVAL:

The American Museum of Natural History's Margaret Mead Film Festival is the longest-running showcase for international documentaries in the United States. The Mead Festival screens documentaries that increase our understanding of the complexity and diversity of the peoples and cultures that populate our planet. The Mead Festival has evolved with the times while maintaining its important history and has grown steadily to reflect the ever-evolving incarnations of storytelling, technology and growing access to communities near and far which are steeped in the documentary tradition. Encompassing a broad spectrum of non-narrative work the Mead Festival presents the best in documentary, experimental films, animation, hybrid works, and more.

The Margaret Mead Film Festival takes place at the American Museum of Natural History each fall and travels with a portion of the festival to universities and museums across the country and around the world.

MARGARET MEAD FILMMAKER AWARD:
Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award recognizes documentary filmmakers who embody the spirit, energy, and innovation demonstrated by anthropologist Margaret Mead in her research, fieldwork, films, and writings. Each year the award is given to a filmmaker whose feature documentary offers a new perspective on a culture or community remote from the majority of our audiences' experience as well as displays artistic excellence and originality in storytelling technique. U.S., North American, or World Premiere documentaries (60 minutes or longer) are eligible for the Award. This award has a cash prize.
